Student Internship at BI: Fine Dust Sensors in Action

Three seventh graders from Dresden’s Manos Gymnasium spent a project week at the Barkhausen Institut. There, they explored the field of fine dust sensor technology. They learned how these sensors take measurements, which factors influence the measurement results, and what those results reveal about air quality. The students also gained insight into various areas of science and experienced the daily work of researchers firsthand.
The interns first learned how a fine dust sensor works: How does it take measurements? What measurement results can be expected? And what do those results mean? Once the sensor was wired and programmed, the students conducted measurement series at different locations in Dresden. Afterwards, we compared the measurement results with their expectations and discussed the findings.
At the end of the week, fine dust expert Dr. Sven Lißner from the Chair of Transport Ecology at TU Dresden answered remaining questions and vividly explained further background on fine dust formation and measurement.
The students agreed: the week was both exciting and educational, offering them fascinating insights into scientific work.
