Career Development
At the Barkhausen Institut (BI), we place great value on personalized career development and staff support. To foster both professional and personal growth, BI regularly offers internal training programs for all employees.
Biannual performance reviews are a central element of our development culture. In these one-on-one meetings, medium- and long-term career goals are discussed, and customized development steps are agreed upon. Clear, measurable objectives are also defined during these conversations.
Development Programs
BI Qualification Program
All employees are encouraged to expand their skills through the BI’s internal qualification program. Topics include presentation skills, project management, team leadership, communication, and Good Scientific Practice.
Doctoral Research at the BI
PhD candidates at BI follow a structured doctoral process, guided by internal regulations and our staff development framework. This includes a formal doctoral agreement, ongoing quality feedback, and support in engaging with the scientific community—such as publishing in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at international conferences. Doctoral researchers also present their current work at biannual in-house colloquia.
Science Communication at BI
Science communication is a core part of our mission. We offer dedicated workshops, regular practice opportunities, and feedback to help researchers share their work with the public and make their findings accessible to broader audiences.

Internationality & Diversity
An International Workplace
To support our international team, we offer conversation training in both German and English. In addition, our international staff benefit from the wide range of qualification, networking, and cultural services provided by the DRESDEN-concept Welcome Center.
Women@DDc Network
The BI is strongly committed to advancing women in science. In 2022, the Barkhausen Institut and TU Dresden’s Diversity Management Unit (9.3) co-founded the Women@DDc Network. The goal is to connect and empower women scientists and science managers across the DRESDEN-concept research alliance. The network offers a platform for dialogue on academic careers and challenges. Through workshops, panel discussions, and expert talks, it fosters professional exchange and promotes visibility for women in science. Today, the network includes around 400 members.
