Career Development at the BI
At Barkhausen Institut (BI), we place great importance on individual career development and long-term staff development. To support both professional and personal growth, BI regularly offers internal training opportunities for all employees. Biannual performance reviews are a central element of our career development culture. In these one-on-one meetings, medium- and long-term career goals are discussed, and customized career development steps are agreed upon. These meetings also serve to define clear and measurable goals.
Career Development Program at the BI
BI Training Program
All employees have the opportunity to enhance their skills through the internal BI training program. Topics range from presentation skills, project management, and team leadership to communication and Good Scientific Practice.
Doctoral Studies at the BI
Doctoral candidates at BI follow a structured doctoral process. The framework is defined in the internal PhD Guidelines and our Career Development Concept. This includes a formal doctoral agreement, ongoing feedback on the quality of the research, and support for engaging in scientific discourse, for example, through publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international conferences. Doctoral researchers also present and discuss their current research findings in biannual internal colloquia.
Public Outreach at the BI
Public outreach is a key part of our work at the BI. Our employees receive targeted training in this area – through dedicated workshops, regular training sessions, and individual feedback. Through public outreach activities, our researchers engage with the public and explain their scientific findings in an accessible way.
Internationality & Diversity
International BI
For our international team, we offer conversation training in both German and English. In addition, our international employees can take advantage of the wide range of services offered by the DRESDEN-concept Welcome Center – including training, networking, and cultural programs.
Women@DDc Network
Supporting women in science is a particular priority for the BI.
The Women@DDc Network was launched in 2022 as a joint initiative of the Barkhausen Institut and the Diversity Management Unit at TU Dresden. The network aims to connect female scientists across all status groups and science managers within the DRESDEN-concept research alliance and strengthen their visibility.
The network provides a platform for exchanging ideas on career paths and challenges in science and academia. In addition to workshops and panel discussions on topics such as visibility, career development, and strategic networking, Women@DDc facilitates direct contact with female experts from various scientific fields.
The network now has more than 500 members.
