Online Live Debate "Corona App: Brave New Data World?"

The Barkhausen Institute will participate on June 11 and 12, 2020, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the debate "Corona App: Brave New Data World?" organized by the Saxon State Centre for Political Education. The online event is part of the discussion series "Learning from the Crisis? Open Society in the Post-Corona Phase."

The Saxon State Centre for Political Education announces the event as follows: "In times of the Corona pandemic, everything is different: even data-sensitive Germany is debating whether people should make their personal data available via an app to help combat the crisis. The goal of the 'Corona-Warn-App' is to contain the pandemic. Mobile phones are intended to track who has been near infected individuals, making it easier to trace chains of infection and alert people to a possible infection. Before the event, the public can submit questions on the topic at www.slpb.de/veranstaltungen/aus-der-krise-lernen. Together with the participants, the expert will discuss in this citizen debate to what extent the welfare of the community takes precedence over the rights of individuals. Among other concerns, many fear that data protection could be weakened if such apps track users’ movement profiles. It is also debated whether the Corona app will become legally mandatory or whether people will be free to choose to install it. Questions about who has access to the data and whether it is sufficiently anonymized still need to be clarified."
