PRESS RELEASE: How Trustworthy Is Our Technology? BI Provides Answers at the IEEE 6G Summit in Dresden

Dresden, 18 May 2026 – How can trust in digital technologies be implemented in practice? The Barkhausen Institut (BI) will present initial answers at this year’s IEEE 6G Summit on 19 and 20 May at the International Congress Center Dresden (ICD).

With four interactive demonstrators, the Dresden-based research institute provides insights into its research on trustworthy communication, artificial intelligence, connected systems, and microelectronics.

Digital technology is everywhere, and expectations are rising that it should function securely, transparently, and reliably. “The electronics of the future require a new level of trust,” says Prof. Dr. Gerhard Fettweis, founding director and scientific director of the BI. “To achieve this, we must develop solutions and implement them consistently from chip design to software in systems such as 6G.”

The institute demonstrates how this ambition can be put into practice through several interactive demonstrators:

A pinball machine playfully illustrates how digital systems can be protected through isolation. It demonstrates the basic concept behind secure and trustworthy operating systems running on microchips designed at BI.

The Privacy-Preserving Machine Learning demo addresses the question of how artificial intelligence can be trained and deployed in compliance with data protection requirements without exposing sensitive information.

The FlexiPHY hardware-software platform showcases a flexible physical (PHY) layer with RF chips and antennas developed at BI. It governs how data are converted into radio waves, transmitted, and received. The platform demonstrates the reuse of hardware for communication and sensing in energy-efficient 6G applications.

A motion-capture system allows a robot dog to be controlled intuitively through human gestures in a logistics use case.

The demonstrators show that trustworthy technologies emerge only through the interaction of hardware, communication systems, and intelligent applications. The IEEE 6G Summit provides the ideal setting to discuss these approaches with international researchers and industry partners and to further develop them together.
